8TV Scholarship Fund Network partners with SEGi for the third year to offer RM1, 000, 000 worth of scholarships

8TV and SEGi carved another milestone with the launch of the 8TV Scholarship Fund.
When it was first introduced in early 2006 in collaboration with SEGi, the annual 8TV Scholarship Fund, with a scholarship fund of RM 300,000, supported nine deserving students to pursue diploma or degree programs. In 2007, the fund had increased to RM 800,000 and was given as scholarships for 21 students.

The 8TV Scholarship Fund is 8TV’s way of giving back to the community through nurturing deserving young Malaysians through academia. Through this fund, students receive scholarships to cover tuition fees for undergraduate degree, diploma and foundation level courses covering various disciplines.

The 2008 8TV Scholarship Fund, now valued at a record RM1,000,000, aims to benefit deserving scholars, comprising of youths and young adults who also happen to be the core target audience of 8TV.

“The increment of the fund to RM1,000,000 this year hopes to help more students further their studies and achieve their ambitions,” said En. Ahmad Izham Omar, Chief Executive Officer of 8TV. “We really want to help young intellects carve a name for themselves in the future and potentially brighten and improve their lives.”

”With an encouraging increase in the amount of applicants last year, it is only reasonable that we provide a larger fund to cater for a higher number of applicants expected this year,” adds Izham.
“We are on the lookout for students with good SPM results and also involved in a wide range of character-building co-curricular activities.”

Dr. Tan Beng Cheok, Senior Vice President (Academic) of SEGi International Berhad is pleased to once again launch the 8TV scholarship fund, an annual event since SEGi's re-branding in 2006.

“We strongly believe our partnership with 8TV will continue to flourish, as we share the same passion in educating the creative young minds today.

Everyone has a right to education. However, not everyone can afford it. SEGi and 8TV works together to make the dreams of many who crave higher education come true.
SEGi Group of Colleges does its best to provide industry driven programmes that meet the demands of the modern world. Our programmes are continuously evolving to suit the market needs, and we bring in new programmes that are demanded by the global job market.
SEGi has new programmes in store for students. We recently received approvals for new 3+0 degree programmes in hotel and tourism, engineering and business programmes. We have in the pipeline programmes of build environment, pharmacy, health sciences and biotechnology. We are working bring in more exciting programmes in the area of science," said Dr. Tan.
Students may apply for this scholarship fund via www.8tv.com.my or http://www.segi.edu.my/8tvscholarshipfund/ starting 10th of March 2008. The closing date for this application is 10th of April 2008.

8TV, together with SEGi College, will jointly shortlist and select the candidates. The short listed candidates will then be contacted for a series of interviews by the third week of April and the list of confirmed scholars will be announced by May. The 8TV Scholarship Fund will cover tuition fees for undergraduate degree, diploma or foundation level programs for successful applicants in various courses including business and accountancy, engineering and information technology, education and social sciences, creative arts and design, nursing, hotel management and tourism, and American Degree Program. Scholars will be offered places at SEGi campuses located in Kota Damansara, Subang Jaya, Kuala Lumpur, Penang and Kuching, Sarawak.

The PSD Scholarship (Biasiswa JPA) 2008

The Public Service Department (PSD) or Jabatan Perkhidmatan Awam (JPA) today announced its opening of JPA Scholarship 2008, encompassing both the local and oversea studies. Students who obtain 10 1As in the SPM 2007 whose family income does not exceed RM1,500 monthly will be automatically given a JPA Scholarship. However, they will still need to fulfil the criteria for the Oversea Scholarship Program (for those under the oversea scholarship program), as well as undergo the interview process.

JPA has also reminded those who wish to pursue their studies with the JPA Scholarship must not only excel in academic, but active in extra curricular activities and possess strong leadership skill. Just to give you idea how competitive this scholarship is, they were 12,499 applications for the last year’s scholarship, out of which 746 were those who obtained 1A in all of the subjects taken. The total number of students sitting for SPM 2007 is higher than that of 2006 by some over 1000 margins.

The following is the excerpt of translation of JPA’s press release from the original Malay version. (To get the Malay version, click here - it is in PDF file format).

1. Number of scholarships

The government through the Public Service Department (PSD or JPA - Jabatan Perkhidmatan Awam) offers scholarship opportunity to selected students to pursue higher education for their first degree. The scholarship opportunity is continually extended for the year 2008 with focus on critical fields such as Medicine, Dentistry, Veterinary Science, Engineering, Science & Technology as well as Social Science to cater the employment needs of the public and private sectors.

Aligned with the implementation of the Ninth Malaysia Plan (RMK9) and the human capital development in the selected fields, the government has added a further 200 scholarship opportunities which increases the total scholarships provided for 2008 to 2000. An amount of RM1.74 billion was allocated for this year’s scholarship provision.

2. Requirements and criteria

The principle requirements for the JPA Scholarship award are outlined as below:

  • Open to SPM leavers with excellent academic results
  • Not exceeding 18 years old (19 years for transition students i.e. peralihan) as of 31 December 2007
  • Candidates will go through interview process
  • Successful candidates will undergo preparation program at designated institutions

Criteria used to measure candidate’s eligibility:

  • Academic results
  • Involvement in extra curricular activities
  • Interview performance
  • Family and socio-economic background

It is worth to note that a student who scored 9 1As with active involvement in extra curricular activities will be given preference than a student with 15 1As but is not active in extra curricular. Also, again, priority will be also given to students who come from the family with lower financial capability.

3. Application method

Scholarship form is available online at www.jpa.gov.my. No fee is incurred for applications and application can be submitted once the SPM results are out. The advertisement for the scholarship opportunity is provided in the website. Additionally, advertisements will also be put on major local newspapers on the 9th, 10th, 12th and 16th March 2008.
