MCA to set up education fund
KUALA LUMPUR, May 24 (Bernama) -- MCA will set up an education fund, involving an initial fund of RM30 million, to assist those wanting to pursue higher studies.
Its president, Datuk Seri Dr Chua Soi Lek, said a committee had been formed to look into the relevant aspects before the fund could be launched.
"The committee has been given two weeks to identify the financial sources for the fund, the allocation to be given annually and whether it is to be given as loans or scholarships," he told reporters after chairing the party's Presidential Council here today.
Dr Chua said the fund would be opened to all races.
On the Public Service Department (PSD) scholarships, Dr Chua said he and MCA Youth Chief Datuk Wee Ka Siong were at PSD to discuss the matter today.
"There are some problems, like the applicants being offered other courses instead of the ones they have applied for, and there are also those who applied to take degree courses, but are offered diploma courses.
"The PSD has agreed to look into the matter," he added.
In another development, Dr Chua said a museum would be built to expose to the people the contributions made by the Chinese community in the country's independence.
He expected the museum to be build in Melaka as the Melaka government had given its green light for it to be built there.

APART from looking at students’ results, HELP University College assistant registrar R. Parmispery also used a calculator when vetting the Star Education Fund scholarship applications.
The calculator, she said, was used to calculate the total family income, taking into consideration the number of family members. That’s how serious the partners-in-education are with the applications they receive every year.

All 29 Star Education Fund partner institutions sent their representatives last week to Menara Star to vet the applications. Shortlisted applicants will be called for an interview soon.
Universiti Tunku Abdul Rahman vice-president (student development and alumni relations) Assoc Prof Dr Teh Chee Seng said he received over 100 applications, with 95% of the applicants from middle and lower income groups.
“The competition is tough. I look for students who have good aptitude and communication skills,” he said.
SEGi University College deputy registrar Norman Chu said a statement of purpose would help the selection committee know and understand the applicants better. However, students should not make up any stories to earn sympathy from the committee.
“We want to hear the true story. This is not the time for creative writing. Cut to the chase and tell us your story as concise as possible in your essay,” he said.
KDU University College admissions and bursary department senior manager Kwan Kow Cheun said he would normally use the interview as an opportunity to verify some of the details given by the applicants.
The University of Nottingham Malaysia Campus director of research for Faculty of Engineering Prof Dr Andrew Chan said applicants should be prepared for the interview.
“There are questions that you could anticipate and prepare for them. We will look at your financial needs, academic performance and extra-curricular activities,” he said.
The institution’s School of Computer Science assistant professor Chew Sze-Ker concurred, noting that applicants should have strong communication skills.
While it is a good idea to highlight your strengths and achievements to the selection committee during the interview, don’t go overboard.
“Some applicants ‘oversell’ themselves during the interview which can send out a wrong message,” said Brickfields Asia College chief operations officer Aria Singham.
The top five contributors are The University of Nottingham Malaysia Campus, INTI International University and Colleges, UCSI University Foundation, Sunway University and Singapore Institute of Management.

Commonwealth Scholarship And Fellowship Plan For Postgraduate Study
Scholarships overview
Education is of critical importance to NZAID’s aim of achieving a safe and just world free of poverty. As part of its education strategy, NZAID provides scholarships to citizens of some developing countries to undertake vocational training or tertiary level study in their home country, in New Zealand or in the Pacific region.
The purpose of NZAID’s scholarships schemes is to enhance the skills, training and knowledge of selected individuals and thereby build capacity to contribute to the sustainable development of key areas in their home country. By awarding scholarships in areas where NZAID has committed funding, such as education, health, growth and livelihoods, leadership and governance, and economic development, these scholarships can contribute to NZAID’s mandate of poverty elimination.
To achieve this, NZAID awardees are required to return to their home country on completion of their scholarship to contribute to the development of their country through positions in government, civil society or private sector organisations.
The New Zealand Government offers the following scholarships to candidates of selected developing countries:

The ASEAN Scholarship 2009
The ASEAN Scholarship is
offered by the Government of Singapore to students who excel in the secondary
education and is available in 9 ASEAN countries, namely: Malaysia, Brunei,
Indonesia, Cambodia, Laos, Myanmar, Philippines, Thailand and Vietnam. The
scholarship
is not available for Singaporean nationals and those who are already attending
schools in Singapore.
With the
scholarship,
students can pursue the Singapore-Cambridge General Certificate of Education (GCE
A-Level) or equivalent education. Those who obtain excellent A-Level result can
also apply for the ASEAN Undergraduate
Scholarship which is offered
by the Nanyang Technological University and National University of Singapore.
One
of the main objectives and purposes of the
scholarship is to lure
students outside of Singapore and gain experience in arguably one of the most
advanced and recognized education systems in the world. Apart from offering full
scholarship,
some of the excellent students applying for the
scholarship but is not
offered one, he or she may be entitled for a Merit Award to study in Singapore
institutions. This is especially true if you perform well in the
scholarship
selection test. The Merit Award offers paying the school fees at local student’s
rates.
The ASEAN
Scholarship
for Malaysians.
Three types of scholarships are
available for applicants from Malaysia - namely the Pre-University One
Scholarship,
Secondary Three
Scholarship
and Secondary One
Scholarship.
The first offers 2 years of Pre-University studies, while the second 4 year,
including Secondary Three to Pre-University Two studies. The final one offers a
6-year
scholarship.
