NEWS can mean different things to different people. For example, a shopping-cum-business centre is proposed in your neighbourhood.
One person may view this positively because many jobs will be created, while another will worry about the centre's impact on the environment.
Your neighbourhood grocer, on the other hand, will view it as a business threat.
The Star's Newspaper-in-Education (NiE) programme is a tool that bridges the gap between learning and life.
So far, more than 500 schools are buying The Star or have sponsored copies sent to them.
NiE helps students improve reading, writing and thinking skills and encourages them to become involved in their communities and their world.
Thus, for more schools to benefit from the programme, we would like to invite your organisation to sponsor copies of The Star to schools.
A weekly pullout, which includes both an NiE supplement and stuff@school section, is distributed free with The Star exclusively to schools at a discounted price.
As a sponsor, your organisation can help more students improve not only their English, but also Maths and Science – and in the process, have fun while learning.
Help them find out what's going on in the world and expose them to the pleasure and excitement of reading.
Star-NiE teacher and student workshops complement the NiE programme. The workshops are held to brief teachers on how to use the The Star as a teaching tool.
Our trainers focus on how to make learning a rewarding experience for students, while providing hands-on activities for the participants.
For details, call The Star’s customer care unit at 03-7967 1777, from Monday to Friday, between 9am and 5pm.

Insurance Education Plan
Insurance education plan's features normally have payor benefits. One significant advantage of such plan is that should the contributor die or be totally and permanently disabled, the future payments due until the plan matures are immediately waived. The beneficiary will receive the benefits as defined in the plan, i.e., the child's education fund is secured no matter what happens.
Another advantage of using insurance education plan is the tax deduction.
Education Planning through Unit Trust
However, if you choose to fund your child education by investing in unit trust, remember to complement it with an equivalent term life plan, so that should the payor die or become incapacitated, the there will still be a fund for your child to continue pursue his or her education dream.
The investment portfolio must also be monitored closely and rebalanced every year, so that as the child's age grows closer to his or her tertiary education age, the fund should be rebalanced to more conservative portfolios.

There are many sources of funding if you want to study in the UK. The British Government and other UK organisations provide a number of scholarships and awards for international students.
A. Who should I approach?
1. Start with your own Ministry or Department of Education. It should be able to give you information about the funding available.
2. The British Council. They may have an office in your own country and will tell you about the relevant schemes.
3. If there's no British Council locally, try the British Embassy or High Commission.
B. How Do I Apply?
1. Many grant-making organisations have strict requirements which you must meet so read the conditions carefully.
2. Apply for your grant at least one year before the start of your course and make sure you know the deadline for applying.
3. Fill in the application form clearly and concisely. Use the grant-making body's application form if there is one.
Useful tip: The grant-making bodies usually award only small amounts of money, which will not cover the full cost of tuition fees and living expenses, so make sure you have enough money for your fees and living needs. It's nearly impossible to organise financial help once you're here and you may be refused UK entry without proof of sufficient funds.
